Most people know Benedict Arnold as the person who betrayed America during the Revolutionary War. More than being a traitor, Arnold was regarded as the best soldier in America. He achieved astounding successes on land and sea, with a naval battle being perhaps his finest performance. Understanding this complex person within the context of the American Revolution is essential to forming an opinion of him and knowing how he changed the course of the Revolutionary War.

Blane Ampthor is a retired federal employee with more than 36 years of service. He has had a lifelong interest in history and has read extensively on World War II, the American Revolution, and ocean liners. He has taught with several Lifelong Learning Institutes and has instructed with various organizations such as the Loudoun County Public system in Virginia, AARP, and seniors’ communities. He enjoys visiting sites related to his interests so he can gain a full understanding of events.

Blane has presented classes for LLI Manassas on the American Revolution (Parts one and two); the Indianapolis 500 race; noteworthy but not well-known people buried at Arlington National Cemetery; the Titanic tragedy; and the Great Atlantic Speed Chase of the Grand Ocean Liners.
