What Remains? brings together works by veteran artists whose practices emerge from the enduring afterlives of military service. The exhibition situates these artists within a broader inquiry into memory, history, and the material and psychological residues of war. In the context of the United States’ 250th anniversary, What Remains? offers a critical lens through which to reconsider national narratives—not as resolved histories, but as contested and ongoing processes of meaning-making. 

Rather than commemorating history as fixed or complete, the exhibition foregrounds lived experience, centering the voices of artists whose service during the Vietnam War continues to inform their creative practices. War does not conclude with discharge; it persists—in the body, in memory, and across generations. The works assembled here trace these continuities, reflecting how military experience is carried forward, transformed, and, at times, resisted. Each artist engages this central question differently: what remains after violence, and what might yet emerge from its aftermath? Rejecting singular narratives, What Remains? embraces multiplicity, contradiction, and tension. These artists do not speak in unison; rather, they disrupt institutional frameworks, challenge inherited histories, and unsettle dominant representations of war.
