Enjoy a concert of vivid storytelling and instrumental mastery, featuring the internationally acclaimed cellist, Anita Graef. Known for her “superlative artistry” and “deeply communicative” playing, Graef takes center stage for Camille Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto No. 1 in A Minor. A cornerstone of the repertoire, this work is celebrated for its seamless structure and soaring lyricism, providing the perfect showcase for Graef’s expressive power.
The program opens with the dark intensity of Antonin Dvorák’s Othello, a dramatic overture that captures the jealousy and passion of Shakespeare’s tragedy through Dvorák’s signature lush, late-Romantic orchestration. The evening concludes with a rare and delightful journey into the imagination: Deems Taylor’s Through the Looking Glass. This symphonic suite—one of the most successful American works of the early 20th century—vividly depicts Alice’s adventures, from the frantic “Jabberwocky” to the poignant “Looking-Glass Insects,” bringing Lewis Carroll's beloved characters to life through a colorful and witty orchestral lens.
